Mainland Chinese travelers and the growing population of “Gangpiao (港漂)”, i.e. mainland ‘drifters’ who come to Hong Kong to work or study, present a major opportunity for Hong Kong businesses to tap into and capture sales. However, with competition fierce for attracting visitors, how can you ensure your brand stands out?

Xiaohongshu marketing combines useful content, creator collaborations and a clear brand presence to help people discover and consider a business. For Hong Kong brands, an effective plan should distinguish mainland visitors from mainland-born people living, working or studying in Hong Kong, often referred to as Gangpiao.

These audiences may share a language but have different questions, routines and reasons to choose your business.

Build separate briefs for visitors and residents

For visitors, plan content around a specific trip: how to get there, what to expect, how long an experience takes and what needs booking.

For residents, consider everyday usefulness: neighbourhood recommendations, regular services, repeat visits and practical comparisons.

For example, a restaurant could develop a visitor guide built around a nearby itinerary, alongside a separate series about weekday dining for people working in the area. These are planning examples, not campaign results.

Make content seeding useful

Content seeding means introducing a product, service or experience through material that gives people a reason to consider it.

Build each piece around one real question. Show the experience clearly, explain relevant details and give the reader enough information to decide whether it suits them. Confirm prices, opening hours and availability before publishing time-sensitive information.

A useful content brief includes the audience question, the main message, supporting evidence, required visuals and the intended next step.

Choose KOLs and KOCs for audience fit

Key opinion leaders and consumer creators can bring different perspectives to a campaign. Assess the relevance of their audience, the quality of their previous content and how naturally your offering fits their usual topics.

Give creators a clear factual brief while allowing room for their own voice. Agree deliverables, review stages, usage rights and how commercial relationships will be disclosed.

Avoid treating follower count as the only selection criterion. A relevant creator should be able to explain why the experience matters to the people who follow them.

Use AI to reduce repetitive production work

AI can help group audience questions into themes, develop alternative content angles and turn approved source material into draft briefs or storyboards.

For example, one verified restaurant information sheet could support an itinerary outline, a menu explainer and a creator briefing draft. A local editor should check each version for accuracy, cultural relevance and brand tone.

Keep actual customer experiences and product evidence at the centre of the work. AI-generated material should not be presented as a real customer review.

Define the next step before launch

Decide what an interested reader should do next and confirm that the route is supported by the account and current platform rules. Do not assume every account can use the same links or conversion features

Make practical information consistent across campaign content and the destination. Assign someone to answer questions and keep time-sensitive details current.

Review consideration as well as reach

Choose measures that reflect the brief. Views can indicate exposure; saves, relevant questions and other engagement can help explain interest. Connect these with enquiries, bookings or purchases where measurement is available.

Review which topics attract the intended audience and which questions remain unanswered. Use those findings to improve the next content brief and creator collaboration.
